Description
La Compañía Church is a living example of art and faith in Ecuador, a true expression of the Baroque, built between 1605 and 1765.
Jesuit priests including Marcos Guerra, Jorge Vinterer, Leonardo Deubler, Venancio Gandolfi and Hernando de la Cruz, all of which were fine craftsmen, sculptors, painters and architects took part in creating this unique temple. Hernando de La Cruz created the original canvases depicting Hell and The Final Judgement in 1620, whose reproductions lie today on the northern and southern narthex of the church. The prowess of colonial Quito artisans contriburted as well, covering the temple in gold and gifting magnificent works of art. Artists such as Nicolás Xavier Goribar, Bernardo de Legarda, Antonio Salas, and the very special anonymous artistry of the many members of the Quito Art School left their mark in the exuberant decoration.
