Description

The construction of the Convent of San Agustín began in 1580, with blueprints of architect Francisco Becerra, and was later completed in 1650 by architect Juan Corral. The convent has within it a series of corridors composed by 9 Tuscan Doric capital columns, 2 pilasters and 10 stilted arches. On each wall we find a gallery where you can see 39 paintings that depict St, Augustine’s life, the work of Quito master Miguel de Santiago. The Eastern corridor features a Mudejar ceiling, and the convent is highlighted by its single colonial-style garden with central fountain.

Sala Capitular is located in the Eastern corridor. It is the convent’s largest room, 22.5 m. long, 7 m. wide and 6mts.
high. It was used as the main auditorium of Quito’s first university, unuversidad de San ulgencio. here, the first National Independence Actwas signed in August, 1809.
